Introduction
The General Assembly in resolutions 62/209 of 19th December 2007 and 63/233 of 19th December 2008, decided to convene a High-Level United Nations Conference on South-South Cooperation in 2009 on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the adoption of the Buenos Aires Plan of Action for Promoting and Implementing Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries.
The General Assembly entrusted the President of the High-level Committee on South-South Cooperation to undertake the necessary consultations with Member States in preparation for the Conference. As confirmed in resolution 64/1 of 6th October 2009, the government of Kenya will host the conference at the highest possible level from 1st to 3rd December 2009 in Nairobi.
Under the theme, “Promotion of South-South Cooperation for Development,” this conference will provide the opportunity for U.N. Member States and the entire U.N. Development System to assess the progress made, reaffirm goals and commitments, share best practices and lessons learned and identify obstacles encountered as well as actions and initiatives to overcome them and important measures for further implementation in addition to covering new challenges and emerging issues. Furthermore, the Conference will provide an opportunity for policymakers to strategize how best to tap into the rapidly growing capacities in the South and to harness the present momentum of South-South cooperation towards reaching internationally agreed development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
